From Under a Boat to On Top of The Industry
Long Doan is a highly successful real estate broker with over 25 years of experience. He is also the founder of Realty Group, the fastest-growing real estate brokerage in Minnesota. By most accounts, he is living the dream. But it wasn’t always this way. Long’s story begins at eight years old when he saw his father taken away to a political prison in their home country of Vietnam. He didn’t see his father again until he was 32 years old. At 13, Long began the long and treacherous journey across the ocean to America.
Long was smuggled out of Vietnam, with a boatload of others, crammed under the deck of a fishing boat with no bathrooms in sight. After 2 unsuccessful attempts, Long was able to get out of the refugee camp known as “Hell Island” and get to the United States, where he found solace in the home of his aunt and uncle. He credits his perseverance to adopting a “victor” mindset, recognizing that despite the obstacles, he had the grit to make it through and was finally being rewarded. Long reminds us all of how to control our own destinies and how important it is to surround ourselves with people who can be there for us during hardship.
Realty Groups
Long and his partner started their real estate brokerage, Realty Group, in the hopes of helping people, giving back, and being the kind of brokerage they wished they’d had when starting out. Each broker is treated like the CEO of their own company using Realty Group’s “plug and play” partnership model. Realty Group provides coaching and mentorship to its brokers to address problems and help them to achieve a consistent income. They help their agents turn real estate into a career, rather than just a job.
Long emphasizes how important it is to recognize your success style and play to your strengths. Some with the success style of “the hunter” might be exceptional at cold calling, while others might be bad at cold calling but good at cultivating existing relationships. Long recommends systematizing as many things as possible to increase time efficiency, as time is a finite resource that we all have the same amount of. On top of all this, Long stresses his “win or learn” mentality. We will all encounter failures; the important part is using them to learn, grow, and increase your chances of success next time.
Thanks to his winning mindset and tactics, Long and his team have turned Realty Group into the fastest-growing brokerage in Minnesota, with plans to expand around the Midwest and eventually nationally. The company’s strategy of going deep in Minnesota versus going wide across several states has helped establish Realty Group’s reputation and client base. The brokerage will continue to grow in leaps and bounds, and I’m certain that Long’s wisdom will help you and your businesses do the same.
